INSTITUTIONAL SKETCH top
Founded in 1875, by Isaac Mayer Wise under the auspices of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the Hebrew Union College was established to train rabbis in both religious and secular education. It is the oldest and most prestigious seminary and college of its kind in America. Besides Isaac Mayer Wise its past presidents include such notables as Kaufmann Kohler and Julian Morgenstern; its professors and graduates also share equal acclaim.
The college is noted for its progressive philosophy concerning Reform Judaism in its practice and administration. In fact, the history of the college is synonymous with the history of the Reform Jewish movement in America, for the Reform movement has received definition through the Hebrew Union College and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. With the Nelson Glueck administration (1947-1970), the Hebrew Union College merged with the Jewish Institute of Religion in New York (1950). At the present date, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion has reached a national and international scope with individual campuses in Cincinnati, New York City, Los Angeles, and Jerusalem, Israel.*
Several histories have been compiled on the Hebrew Union College. The most recent publication is Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion At One Hundred Years, edited by Samuel Karff with a history by Michael A. Meyer, Hebrew Union College Press, 1976.
