Biographical Sketch
Adolf Philippsborn was born in Potsdam, Germany. Philippsborn's interests included Semitic languages, history and philosophy. He was a graduate of both the Jewish Teacher Seminary in Muenster and the Lehernstalt für die Wissenschaft in Berlin. Philippsborn served for several years in various German congregations until emigration to the United States in 1939.
Once arriving in the United States, the ordained Rabbi Adolf Philippsborn chose to take additional coursework at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. His commitment to Reform Judaism institutions remained strong. Philippsborn joined the Central Conference of American Rabbis and was a committee member on Family, Marriage, and the Home. Philippsborn was also an executive board member for the southeastern region of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and active in the Texas Kallah of Rabbis.
Philippsborn served in several congregations, and was also a part-time chaplain. His pulpits ranged all over the south including: Shreveport, Louisiana, Marshall, Texas, Harlingen, Texas, Lubbock, Texas, Gadsen, Alabama, Muncie, Indiana, Colorado Springs, Colorado and Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Adolf Philippsborn died in 1967. He was survived by his wife Gertrude and three children.
Scope and Content Note
The Adolf and Gertrude Philippsborn Papers include a history of the Jewish community of Marshall, Texas and a 1969 history –with a 1970 supplement– of the Jewish community of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Also in the collection are newspaper clippings, publications and photographs relating to other Mississippi Jewish communities. Nearprint material and maps in the collection detail the further history of Vicksburg. The span dates for the collection are 1875-1970.
There are no personal papers or correspondence or other documents within this collection. It contains only the two community histories together with the notes and documentation to support Gertrude Philippsborn's study of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
