BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top
Robert Philip Goldman was born in Cincinnati on May 14, 1890, the son of Louis J. Goldman and Rose Frohman Goldman. He was educated in Cincinnati public schools, the Ohio 1907), Yale College (A.B. in 1911) and Harvard Law School (LL.B. in 1914). In 1919, after serving one year in France as a private during World War I, Goldman spent a year studying at the University of Paris Law School. In 1963, he received an honorary D.H.L. degree from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR).
In 1914, Goldman was admitted to the Ohio Bar and at the same time became associated with Paxton, Warrington and Seasongood (now Paxton and Seasongood). In 1923, he became a partner in this firm. As a lawyer, Goldman was active in the local, state and national bar associations. He was secretary (1925) and president (1954-1955) of the Cincinnati Bar Association, one of the founders and a member of the first Executive Committee of the Cincinnati Lawyer's Guild and Chair of the Legal Aid Committee of the Ohio State Bar Association (1936-1938). He also served memberships on the Council of Delegates of the Ohio State Bar Association, the American Law Institute, the Editorial Board on the Uniform Commercial Code and the Committee on Continuing Legal Education.
Local Cincinnati politics also interested Robert Goldman. He supported the work of the Cincinnati City Charter Committee from its beginning. In 1924 he served as Ward 13 captain for the Charter Party. He was a member of the Board of Directors for over 35 years (beginning in 1930), Chair of the Board for 3 years (1955-1958). Vice-President of the Charter Committee for 6 years (1940-1946) and Chair of the Cincinnati Charter Revision Commission (1949). Goldman ran unsuccessfully for two political offices in Cincinnati: as a candidate for Judge of the Common Pleas Court in 1924 and as a candidate for City Council member in 1949.
Some of Goldman's other activities include serving as a trustee of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society (1932-1936), the University School of Cincinnati, the Legal Aid Society of Cincinnati and the National Alliance of Legal Aid Societies. Goldman was also president of the Proportional Representation League.
Goldman was author of various articles on Cincinnati's political history, proportional representation elections and legal subjects. With Clyde M. Abbott, he authored Anderson's Ohio Corporation Desk Book.
In addition to all of this, Goldman was intensely involved with Jewish affairs both at the local and national level. In 1915 he joined the Cincinnati Zionist Organization. From 1926 through 1938 he was president of Cincinnati's Congregation B'nai Yeshurun (Isaac M. Wise Temple). He served as president of the Cincinnati Jewish Community Council from 1944 through 1949 and co-chaired the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
In the 1920's Goldman began participating in the activities of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), of which his father had been president. Goldman served as chair of the Budget Committee, the Commission on Social Justice and various nomination and program committees. He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1923 and in 1937 he became president of the UAHC. For the next six years, until 1943 when he resigned the presidency, Goldman was intricately involved with Union affairs. Goldman remained on the Board of Trustees after his resignation and in 1953 was elected an honorary life member.
In 1953, the UAHC appointed Goldman as one of its representatives to the HUC-JIR Board of Governors. Thereby Goldman began another intense involvement with a Jewish organization. Goldman served on many of the Board's committees, including the Legal Committee, the Endowment Fund Committee, various nominating committees and the Liaison Committee with UAHC. In 1958 he was elected chair of the HUC-JIR Board of Governors which he retained through 1962. Goldman remained a member of the Board of Governors through the rest of his life. After 1962 he participated in the activities of HUC-JIR basically as a lawyer and member of the Legal and Endowment Fund Committees.
Some of Goldman's other activities with Jewish organizations included memberships in the National Jewish Welfare Fund Board, the first Executive Committee of the controversial American Jewish Conference (originally called American Jewish Assembly) in 1943 and trustee of the Bellfaire Orphan Home in Cleveland (1932-1953).
Robert Philip Goldman died April 10, 1976 in Cincinnati at the age of 86. He was survived by his wife, Therese Wolfstein Goldman, whom he married in 1921, and his three children: David W. (born 1923), Agnes Edna (born 1925) and Barbara Therese (born 1930).
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top
The Robert Philip Goldman Papers (1897-1976) contain correspondence, memoranda, minutes, addresses, reports, financial records, personal notes and nearprint, which trace Goldman's activities as a lawyer and Jewish community activist. Due to Goldman's leadership role in the two major American reform Jewish institutions, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), this collection reflects many events which affected American Reform Judaism from the 1930's through 1970. The Collection is divided into three series:
Series A. General Files (1917-1976) consists of 11 boxes, arranged alphabetically by correspondent or subject of correspondence. Some of the files in this Series record Goldman's participation in the ill-fated American Jewish Conference, his activities with the Cincinnati Jewish Community Council and the Development Fund for American Reform Judaism, Inc. Other files in this series contain Goldman's personal correspondence, correspondence which outlines his activities outside of the Jewish community and Goldman's correspondence either as a representative of the UAHC or the HUC-JIR. Although the latter type of correspondence overlaps somewhat with the other two series in this collection, the Subject Tracings at the end of this inventory bring all related subjects together. In later additions, Box 21, material relating to the Bellefaire Jewish Orphans Home in Cleveland, Ohio has been inserted into Series A after Box 1 . Boxes 22-23 (outgoing correspondence between 1970-1975) remain in the original order of their binders. An alphabetical index to names/groups is at the beginning of each folder.A. GENERAL FILES B. HUC-JIR FILES C. UAHC FILES D. PERSONAL AND MISCELLANEOUS Series B. HUC-JIR Files (1950-1976) consists of 5 boxes alphabetically arranged by correspondent or subject of correspondence. This series shows Goldman's participation in the establishment of the California branch of the HUC-JIR, his involvement with the problems of
building the Jerusalem School, the transition of Alfred Gottschalk into the presidency of the HUC-JIR and the joint HUC-JIR-UAHC fund-raising projects. Much of the correspondence in this series reflects Goldman's activity as legal council to the HUC-JIR: he represented the College in many estate and bequest cases, he collaborated in the writing of many of the College's legal documents, and he participated in establishing/changing the formal structure of the College.Series C. UAHC Files (1926-1975) consists of 6 boxes. As a member of the Board of Trustees, and especially as president of the UAHC, Goldman was kept aware of all the activities of the UAHC and its components. He was given duplicate copies of all significant correspondence, committee and financial reports--all of which are found in this series. Among other topics, the series reflects the Union's financial difficulties during the Depression, the pressure to move the Union headquarters out of Cincinnati, the Union's relationship to the HUC-JIR and the
leadership crisis which was eventually solved by the appointment of Maurice N. Eisendrath as Executive Director. This series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent or subject of correspondence.
SERIES D. PERSONAL AND MISCELLANEOUS (1897-1976) consists of 2 Hollinger boxes and one oversize box. Material in this series include personal clippings about the life of Robert Goldman, his father Louis Goldman and his maternal grandfather Lewis Frohmann. This series also contains wills, grade cards and graduation programs. This series is arranged with material about Robert Goldman followed by family history material.
