Biographical Sketch

Rose I. Bender was born on 22 December 1869 to Joseph and Rachel Magin, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her parents, who were Lithuanian immigrants, were Hebrew scholars who installed in Rose a lifelong love and dedication to the Zionist cause. They also educated her in the Talmud. While still in high school, Bender founded and became president of the first Young Judea Club. She later graduated from the Graetz College of Jewish Studies.

Bender was active in numerous Zionist organizations. In 1927, she joined Hadassah. This commitment lead to a position as a chapter president and later as the national chair of fundraising and an appointment as a delegate for the 1939 World Zionist Congress. Bender also served as the executive director of the Zionist Organization of Philadelphia (the first woman to hold such a position), a board member of both the United Hebrew Schools and Yeshiva of Philadelphia, a member of the American Technion Society, a member of the Philadelphia Zionist Youth Committee and a member of the Women's Division of the Allied Jewish Appeal.

Bender died on 4 November 1964.

Rose Bender married lawyer Oscar C. Bender in June 1917. They had two daughters, Natalie and Harriet.

Scope and Content Note

The Rose I. Bender Papers record the Zionist activities of Rose Bender, national fundraising chairman of Hadassah. An ardent Zionist, most of Bender's papers are correspondence and reports relating to her Zionist activities, and particularly immigration to Palestine during World War II. As a local chapter president, Bender was involved with the youth aliyah movement as well as in setting up meetings and other fundraising events. She also maintained an active presence in a national Zionist movement. There is one folder relating to a Jewish Palestine Pavilion at the 1939 New York's World Fair.

There is one folder of personal correspondence between Bender and her husband, and daughter Natalie, who was studying to be an actress.

Span dates for the collection are 1912-1950 with the bulk of materials covering 1941-1945.
