BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Edgar E. Siskin was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on September 14, 1907. He
spent his boyhood and attended preparatory school in Portsmouth, England prior
to moving with his family to America in 1921. After arriving in New York, the
Siskin family settled in Chicago, Illinois where Edgar's father, himself a
rabbi, was elected rabbi of a newly formed local congregation.

In 1923, Siskin enrolled in and began attending the Hebrew Union College in
Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1929, at the age of 21, Siskin became the youngest
graduate ever at HUC and was ordained as a rabbi. In addition, while at HUC
Siskin attended the University of Cincinnati and received his B.A. from there
in 1928.

Shortly after his ordination as a rabbi Siskin was asked by Congregation
Mishkan Israel in New Haven, Connecticut, one of the oldest (founded 1840) and
most prestigious Reform congregations in the country, to serve as interim
rabbi. A short time later they invited him to become their permanent rabbi.

While in New Haven, Siskin attended Yale University and earned his Ph.D., in
anthropology, in 1941. Later that year he was appointed Visiting Fellow in
Anthropology at Yale, serving in that capacity.

World War II was raging when Siskin enlisted in the U.S. Naval Chaplaincy in
1943. He was transferred into the U.S. Marine Corps and served overseas with
the First Marine Division as Jewish chaplain (the first rabbi ever to be
designated so) from 1943 to 1946. Siskin participated in the landings at
Peleliu and Okinawa and finished his overseas duty in China.

Following his return from overseas Siskin resumed his duties as rabbi at
Congregation Mishkan Israel and was also appointed lecturer with rank of
Assistant Professor in Anthropology at Yale in 1947.

In 1948 Siskin accepted a call to become rabbi at North Shore Congregation
Israel in Glencoe, Illinois. He served as rabbi there until 1972 and is
currently Rabbi Emeritus.

While rabbi at North Shore Congregation Israel Siskin was very active in the
religious and civic live of Glencoe and the Chicago area. He served as
president of the Chicago Board of Rabbis and of the Chicago Association of
Reform Rabbis. He also served as a member of the Alumni Association of HUC-JIR
and was on the Committee to Study the Disorders of Convention Week in Chicago
in 1968.

Siskin authored two major articles, in addition to many smaller articles for
journals and periodicals: "The Impact of the Peyote Cult Upon Shamanism Among
the Washo Indians", 1941; and "The Impact of American Culture Upon the Jew:,
1952.

Siskin married the former Lillian Margolin of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1946. They
have three childres; Jonathan Daniel, Joshua Michael and Sharon.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top

The EDGAR E. SISKIN PAPERS (1928-1977) describe the rabbinical career of
Dr. Edgar E. Siskin, a rabbi for over fifty years. The collection includes
sermons, articles, prayers, eulogies, notes, correspondence, congregational
records and tape recordings. The papers are divided into four series:

                        A. WRITINGS
                        B. CORRESPONDENCE
                        C. CONGREGATIONAL RECORDS
                        D. TAPE RECORDINGS.

The WRITINGS series is divided into two sub-series: Sub-Series 1.
Sermons and Sub-Series 2. Miscellaneous Writings. The CONGREGATIONAL RECORDS
series is also divided into two sub-series: 1. Congregation Mishkan Israel,
New Haven, Connecticut and Sub-Series 2. North Shore Congregation Israel,
Glencoe, Illinois.

The WRITINGS series (1928-1977) Sub-Series 1. Sermons consists of six
Hollinger boxes of sermons. The bulk of the sermons are from Siskin's years as
rabbi at Congregation Mishkan Israel and North Shore Congregation Israel,
spanning the years 1930-1975. The sermons are arranged alphabetically by title
with the untitled sermons placed at the end of the sub-series. The appendix at
the end of the inventory, lists all the sermons in this sub-series, marking
those sermons with an asterisk (*) that have been tape recorded and are kept
in SERIES D. TAPE RECORDINGS.

Sub-Series 2. Miscellaneous Writings consisting of published articles,
prayers, notes, and eulogies. The articles and eulogies are arranged
alphabetically. The prayers (1931-1975) are arranged chronologically. Of
special interest in this sub-series are Siskin's notes on the Yom Kippur
Arab-Israeli War in 1973. Siskin was in Israel at that time and his notes
give an interesting first hand account of the war.

The CORRESPONDENCE series (1938-1976) consists of six Hollinger boxes of
correspondence arranged alphabetically by the name of the person or
organization. Letters are arranged chronologically within each folder. The
bulk of this material spans the years 1960-1972.

The CONGREGATIONAL RECORDS series (1930-1976) Sub-Series 1. Congregation
Mishkan Israel, New Haven, Connecticut, contains papers dealing with persons
and activities of the congregation, 1930-1948. The material is arranged
alphabetically by person or subject and the papers within each file are
arranged chronologically.

Sub-series 2. North Shore Congregation Israel, Glencoe, Illinois, 1948-1976.
Papers dealing with persons and activities of the congregation, arranged
alphabetically by name of person or subject, and arranged chronologically
within each file.

Note: Selective access to some of the more important individuals and
organizations for SERIES A, B, and C, may be made through the Box and Folder
List and the Subject Tracings at the end of the inventory.

The TAPE RECORDINGS series (1958-1969) consists of services recorded at
North Shore Congregation Israel. Some of the sermons in this series are in
draft from in SERIES A. Sub-Series 1. Sermons. Those sermons having both a
draft copy and a tape recording are marked with an asterisk (*) in the Box and
Folder List, SERIES D. and Appendix A.

Note: For additional information on Edgar E. Siskin please consult the
card catalog in the reading room of the American Jewish Archives.
