ACCESS AND PROVENANCE
The JOSEPH DAINOW PAPERS were donated to the American Jewish Archives by 
Mrs. Keren Judith Dainow Rotberg and Mr. Jariel David Dainow in 1979. 
In accordance with Joseph Dainow's wishes, some of his books have been
donated to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and to the Louisiana State
University Law Library in Baton Rouge.

Property rights are assigned to the American Jewish Archives. All literary 
rights to material authored by Joseph Dainow are held by the Dainow heirs. 
Literary rights to materials authored by others are held by the individual 
author or his/her heirs. Questions concerning rights should be addressed 
to the Director of the American Jewish Archives.

The JOSEPH DAINOW PAPERS are open to all users. The original manuscript collection
is available in the reading room of the American Jewish Archives.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Joseph Dainow was born in Montreal, Canada on July 5, 1906 to Aaron and
Pearl (Sourkes) Dainow. He received a B.A. degree from McGill University in
Montreal in 1926 and a B.C.L. degree from the same university in 1929. In 1931
he received the degree Docteur en Droit from the University of Dijon in France
and in 1938 he received an S.J.D. degree from Northwestern University. In
1964, he received an honorary LL.D. degree from the University of Ghent in
Belgium.

From 1931 to 1932 Dainow was a lecturer in Roman law at McGill
University. Following this, from 1932-1933, he was engaged in private law
practice in Montreal. In 1933 Dainow became a research associate at
Northwestern University, remaining there until 1935 when he became a professor
of law at Loyola University in New Orleans. In 1938 he left Loyola to become
an assistant professor of law at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. 
Dainow remained at LSU for the rest of his career, becoming an associate
professor in 1942, professor in 1947, and professor emeritus in 1973.

Dainow travelled widely as a lecturer and visiting professor. He was a
visiting professor of law at the University of Puerto Rico in 1950,
Northwestern University in 1956, University of Texas in 1957, University of
Michigan in 1958, and New York University in 1959. He was a Fulbright lecturer
in France at the University of Paris and the University of Lyon in 1954 and in
Belgium at the University of Ghent in 1962-1963. He was also the Wainwright
lecturer at McGill University in 1976.

Dainow was also involved in many organizations and activities. From 1957
to 1959 he was a member of the U.S. national commission to UNESCO. He was a
member of the International Academy of Comparative Law and of the American
Society of International Law, serving on the executive council from 1959-1962. 
He was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, serving as a member of the
Association's board of governors in 1949-1950 and 1955-1956. He was also a
member of the American Bar Association, American Association of University
Professors, American Foreign Law Association, Louisiana State Law Institute
(council member), American Association for the Comparative Study of Law, Order
of the Coif, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Gamma Eta Gamma.

Dainow served from 1942 to 1946 in the Judge Advocate General's Office
of the United States Army, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was
the chief of the JAGO's research branch Washington office, in charge of all
research facilities and publications including "Military Laws of the United
States" and the monthly bulletin of the Judge Advocate General of the Army. 
He prepared research materials for use in connection with the Nuremburg trial
from June to August 1945 and was a member of the legal staff of the American
prosecution in Nuremburg from August to December 1945. Dainow remained in the
U.S. Army Reserve following his release from active duty until 1958.

Among some of Dainow's scholarly accomplishments were the following. He
was the compiled editor of the Civil Codes of Louisiana, volume one in 1940,
volume two in 1942, and the second edition in 1973. He was also the editor of
the Civil Code of Louisiana in 1947 and 1961, plus Essays on the Civil Law of
0bligations in 1969, The Role of Judicial Decisions and Doctrine in Civil Law
and in Mixed Jurisdictions in 1974 and of special issues of the "Louisiana Law
Review" in 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1977. He was a member of the editorial board
of the "American Journal of Comparative Law." He also was a contributor of
many articles and book reviews to law journals in the United States, Canada
and France.

In 1933 Dainow married the former Frieda Fineman. They had two children:
Jariel David and Keren Judith.  Joseph Dainow died in 1978 at the age of 71.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top

The JOSEPH DAINOW PAPERS (1891; 1922-1978) describe the career of Joseph
Dainow, a lawyer and educator. The collection includes correspondence, legal
documents, articles, manuscripts, and personal items that deal with Dainow's
career as a professor of law, his study and research, and his community
activities. The bulk of the material in the collection spans the years, 
1940-1970. The Papers are divided into four series:

The CORRESPONDENCE series (1935-1978) Sub-Series 1. General consists of twelve and 
one-half Hollinger boxes of correspondence and some reports, clippings, printed materials, 
and notes. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the name of the 
person or organization. Letters are arranged chronologically within each folder.

Sub-Series 2. Fulbright Scholarships consists of one Hollinger box of
correspondence, lectures, notes and other materials dealing with Dainow's two
Fulbright Scholarships. These materials are arranged alphabetically according
to the topics given them by Dainow with the materials from the 1954 scholarship 
listed first followed by the materials from the 1962-1963 scholarship.

Sub-Series 3. Louisiana State University Law School consists of four Hollinger boxes 
f correspondence, minutes, notes, reports, and other materials pertaining to Dainow's 
activities and responsibilities within the LSU Law School. The materials are arranged
alphabetically according to the topics given them by Dainow.

The LEGAL DOCUMENTS series (1933-1978) consists of seven Hollinger boxes
of materials pertaining to Dainow's work and research in the law. Included in
this series are notes, exams, and writings from his law classes at LSU, and
material dealing with his research and study in such topics as the civil code,
civil law, conflict of laws, and international law, among others. The materials 
in this series are arranged alphabetically according to topic and the materials 
within each folder are arranged chronologically.

The LITERARY PRODUCTIONS series (1934-1978) consists of three Hollinger boxes 
of Dainow's published writings. The publications are arranged alphabetically by 
title. The foreign language publications (French and Spanish) have been placed 
at the end of the series.

The PERSONAL series (1891; 1922-1978) consists of one-half Hollinger box
of biographical information, clippings, financial records, photographs, and
miscellaneous material. This series is arranged alphabetically by topic.

Note:     Most of the materials in this collection are in English although some
materials are in French, Spanish and Hebrew. Also, access to some of the more
important topics and individuals in this collection may be made through the
Subject Tracings at the end of this inventory.
