Institutional Sketch

The Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) was created by the merger in 1966 of the Jewish Librarians Association and the Jewish Library Association. The Jewish Librarians Association was formed in 1946 by Sophie Udin of the Zionist Archives and Library in New York, and was composed of academic and research librarians. Dr. Herbert C. Zafren, librarian at Hebrew Union College, became president of this group in 1965 and immediately began working toward the merger. The Jewish Library Association was founded in 1962 by Miriam Leikind; its membership consisted of synagogue librarians and librarians of Jewish community centers. Some were professionally trained librarians; many were nonprofessional volunteers.

The merger of the two groups was formalized in 1966 under the leadership of Dr. Zafren, who became the first president of the new group. The two associations became the two divisions of the new Association of Jewish Libraries: the Research and Special Libraries (R and S) Division, and the Synagogue, School and Center (SSC) Division. The first convention was held on June 19-22, 1966 in Philadelphia. A constitution was adopted in 1967; it was amended in 1972 and again in 1982. Since 1966, conventions have been held annually. During the late 1960s officers were elected for one-year terms. Beginning in 1970 officers served for a two-year period. For a complete list of officers, see Box A4, Folder 13.

AJL publications include: Judaica Librarianship, a professional journal, and the AJL Newsletter, which contains news and book reviews. AJL also publishes bibliographies and other librarians' tools such as the Weine Classification Scheme. Previous publications include newsletters such as The Drop Box and the AJL Bulletin.

This history reflects the association as it exists in 1995, but there have been many organizational changes throughout the years. The following are some sources for the history of the AJL:

  • ALA Yearbook. There has been an entry on the AJL in each volume published since 1980.
  • Posner, Marcia. "The Association of Jewish Libraries: A Chronicle." Judaica Librarianship 5:2 (Spring 1990-Winter 1991), 110-140.
  • Yenish, Joseph. "The Association of Jewish Libraries." Special Libraries 58:(1967), 707-709.

Scope and Content Note

The Records of the Association of Jewish Libraries consist of the archival records of the Association of Jewish Libraries, a national organization of academic research librarians. The purpose of the organization, as stated in its constitution is to promote professional standards in librarianship and improve library services in the field of Judaica and Judaic collections. The collection includes correspondence, reports, constitutions and bylaws, minutes, questionnaires, financial records, membership and officer lists, manuscripts, publications, photographs, and audiocassette tape recordings.
