ACCESS AND PROVENANCE

The CHARLES E. SHULMAN PAPERS were donated to the American Jewish Archives by Mrs. Avis Shulman, Tel Aviv, Israel in August, 1982.

Property rights are held by the American Jewish Archives. All literary rights to material authored by Charles E. Shulman are held by the Shulman heirs. Literary rights to materials authored by others are held by the individual author or his/her heirs. Questions concerning rights should be addressed to the Director of the American Jewish Archives.

The CHARLES E. SHULMAN PAPERS are open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the reading room of the American Jewish Archives.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Charles E. Shulman was born in the Ukraine on July 25, 1900 to Maurice and Rachel Shulman. After coming to the United States, Shulman began his education at Ohio Northern University in 1916, earning an LL.B. degree in 1920.

Following his graduation, Shulman was admitted to the Ohio bar and worked in the law departments of first, the New York Central Railroad in Cleveland in 1920 and then, the Santa Fe Railroad in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1921. In 1922 Shulman returned to Ohio to attend the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. He was ordained rabbi in 1927.

During this time Shulman also studied at two other colleges. From 1922-1923 he was a student at the University of Cincinnati and from 1923-1927 he studied at the University of Chicago, earning a Ph.D. degree in 1924 and an A.M. degree in 1927.

Following his ordination Shulman became rabbi of Congregation Leshem Shomayim in Wheeling, West Virginia. He remained there until 1931 when he left for Glencoe, Illinois to become rabbi of North Shore Congregation Israel. In 1947 he left Glencoe to found a new temple in the Bronx section of New York City, Riverdale Temple. He remained there as rabbi until his death in 1968.

During World War II Shulman served as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander. He served on active duty at naval training stations in Bainbridge, Maryland and Newport, Rhode Island until he was assigned to the Seventh Fleet as Jewish chaplain of the Southwest Pacific.

Shulman was very active in community affairs. He served, among others, in the following organizations: president of the Chicago Rabbinical Association in 1942; member of the national advisory board of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith; member of the executive board of the Mt. Council. New York Anti-Defamation League; member of the national administrative committee of the American Jewish Congress and the national advisory council of the Jewish National Fund; chairman of the committee on public schools of the New York Board of Rabbis; member of the executive board of the Henry Hudson School for Brain Injured Children in New York City;lecturer on Jewish Theology, Oberlin College Graduate School in 1953; member of the National Jewish Welfare Board (committee on Army-Navy Religious Activities); travelling representative of the United Jewish Appeal to Europe, North Africa and Israel in 1952-1953; chairman of the Bronx Urban League; and member of the executive board of the Bronx section of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

Shulman was a prolific writer. He authored the following: Problems of Jews in the Contemporary World, 1934; Europe's Conscience in Decline, 1939; Religion's Message to a War-torn World, 1942; The Best of a Civilization, 1947; On Being a Jew, 1954; A People That Did Not Die, 1956; The Best Years of Our Lives, 1958; What It Means to be a Jew, 1960: Humanity's Unfinished Business, 1964. Shulman was also a regular contributor of book reviews to a number of religious journals and was a member of the editorial board of The Reconstructionist and was chairman of the editorial board of The American Zionist.

Some of the awards given Shulman were honorary degrees from Boston University, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and Ohio Northern University. He also was a recipient of the George Washington medal of the Freedoms Foundation in 1953, 1954, 1955, 1961, and 1963.

On June 27, 1929 Shulman married Avis Clamitz. They had one daughter, Deborah Louise. Charles E. Shulman died on June 2, 1968 at the age of 67.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top

The CHARLES E. SHULMAN PAPERS (1917-1969) document the career of Charles E. Shulman, rabbi, lecturer, and author. The collection consists primarily of the writings and speeches of Shulman, but also includes correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, and other miscellaneous items. The bulk of the material in the collection spans the years 1940-1965. The Papers are divided into three series:
The CORRESPONDENCE series (1931-1969) consists of two Hollinger boxes of correspondence, bulletins, and clippings arranged alphabetically according to the individual or subject. Letters are arranged chronologically within each folder.

The LITERARY PRODUCTIONS series (1923-1968) Sub-Series 1. Sermons and Addresses consists of eight Hollinger boxes of sermons and addresses arranged alphabetically according to title. The untitled sermons have been filed after the titled sermons. The Appendix at the end of this inventory contains a complete list of all the titled sermons in this sub-series.

Sub-Series 2. Book Reviews consists of one-half Hollinger box of book reviews written by Shulman for publication in various journals. The reviews are arranged alphabetically according to the title of the book being reviewed.

Sub-Series 3. Manuscripts and Notes consists of one Hollinger box of manuscripts, plays, poetry and prayers written by Shulman and notes and notebooks from Shulman's student years. The manuscripts and other writings are arranged alphabetically and the notebooks are arranged alphabetically according to subject.

The PERSONAL series (1917-1968) consists of two and one-half Hollinger boxes and one oversize box. The materials in this series are arranged alphabetically according to topic. The oversize box contains awards, certificates, photographs and a tape recording.

The AVIS SHULMAN series (1928-1987) consists of two Hollinger boxes of clippings, writings, photographs, and scrapbooks. The clippings are in chronological order; writings are arranged alphabetically by title, or as originally ordered, if untitled. Folders are arranged alphabetically within each box, though ‘Miscellaneous’ comes at the end.

Note: Four motion pictures originally included with the Papers have been separated from the collection and placed in the Motion Picture file. For further information on these and other materials on Charles E. Shulman, please contact the Archivist of the American Jewish Archives.
