Biographical Sketch

Maurice L. Zigmond was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1904. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1925, was ordained a rabbi in 1925 at Hebrew Union College, and obtained a Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale in 1941. The major portion of Zigmond's career was spent working with Jewish college youth on campuses in New England. He held posts at Harvard, Radcliffe, Yale, and the University of Connecticut. He also served as director of the New England Regional Office of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation during the 1960's and 1970's. Zigmond was active in the peace movement of the 1960's, and strongly supported student protests against the Vietnam War.

Collection includes correspondence, clippings, certificates, sermons, writings, and photographs mostly pertaining to Zigmond's tenure as Director of the New England Regional Office of B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation.

The Maurice L. Zigmond Papers are open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.
