Henry Englander was born in Hungary on 17 February 1877 to Max and Regina Goldstein Englander. In 1879 his family immigrated to the United States, settling in Cincinnati. In 1901, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati and was ordained a rabbi at Hebrew Union College. After ordination, Englander served as rabbi in Ligonier, Indiana at Ahavath Sholom Temple from 1901-1905, while pursuing graduate work at the University of Chicago. He then moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where he studied for a Ph.D. in Semantics at Brown University which he received in 1909. While there he also lectured in the Bible Department at Brown and served as the rabbi of Temple Beth El in Providence. In 1910 he returned to HUC to serve on the faculty and hold the positions of registrar and student advisor. He retired in 1941.

Englander was a rabbi and scholar in bibical and medieval studies. He served as associate editor of the Jewish Conservator in Chicago (1904-1905). He was a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and Exegesis, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and other organizations. He was also the author of many publications in the field of Biblical Exegesis, including The Exodus in the Bible, The Men of the Great Synagogue, and Rashi's View of the Weak Roots.

Englander married Esther Straus in 1912. They had one daughter, Regine, who died at the age of 11 in 1932. Englander died in Cincinnati on 9 April 1951.
