BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Anna Moscowitz Kross was born in Neshves, Russia on 17 July 1891 to Maier and Esther Drazen Moscowitz. Her parents immigrated to New York City two years later. Anna Moscowitz Kross studied at Columbia University and won a scholarship to attend law school. While studying law at New York University, she became interested in penal reform and volunteered to work in the prisons. This interest remained with her for the remainder of her career.

As a lawyer, Anna Kross wanted to help others - particularly the disadvantaged. While serving on the Family Court in the early 1920s, Kross insisted that not only prostitutes but also their clients were booked on charges. She resigned in 1923 to develop a legal practice in labor relations.

In 1933, Kross became the first women judge in the New York City magistrates court. She remained on the bench for 20 years. Because of her sociological approach to many cases, Kross became nationally known. Kross organized and became the first presiding magistrate of the Home Term Court- which dealt specifically with domestic cases. Day care centers were provided for the children of those in court. In 1954, she became the first woman commissioner for the Department of Corrections. She held this job until her retirement in 1966.

Kross was also involved in numerous organizations including law associations, groups involved with law enforcement, the Lucy Stone League, Hadassah and the United Jewish Philanthropies.

Anna M. Kross married Dr. Isodor Kross in 1917. They had two daughters: Dr. Helen K. Golden and Dr. Alice K. Frankel.
