ACCESS AND PROVENANCE The SOLOMON GOLDMAN PAPERS were donated to the American Jewish Archives by Rabbi Goldman's daughter, Ms. Naomi Zemel of Chicago, Illinois in March, 1984.Property rights to the materials are held by the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights have not been dedicated to the public. Literary rights to materials authored by Goldman are held by the Goldman heirs, others are held by the individual author or his/her heirs. Questions concerning rights should be addressed to the Director of the American Jewish Archives.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top
Solomon Goldman was born in Kozin, Volhynia, Russia on August 18, 1893. He came to the United States as a young child and received his early education in the New York City public schools. He graduated from New York University and did graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Chicago. He received his Jewish education at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Yeshivah, where he studied for six years, and at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he was ordained as a rabbi in 1918.Goldman's first pulpit was at Congregation B'nai Israel in Brooklyn, New York, where he served from 1917-1918. He then moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he was rabbi at Congregation B'nai Jeshurun from 1919-1922 and the Jewish Center, which he founded, from 1922-1929. From Cleveland he moved to Chicago, Illinois to become rabbi at Congregation Anshe Emet, where he remained until his death in 1953.
Goldman was an active Zionist, serving as co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, and as president of the Zionist Organization of America 1938-1940. He was active in many other Jewish and civic affairs, including being principal of the first, Young Judea training school for leaders, founder of the Graetzians, Brooklyn Judeans, co-founder of the New York University Menorah Society, President of the Histadruth Ivrith of America, member of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation Commission, and member of the executive committees of the Chicago League for Industrial Democracy, the United Synagogue of America, the Rabbinical Assemmbly of America, and the American Academy of Political and Social Science.
Goldman also lectured widely and authored several books, including: A Rabbi Takes Stock (1931), The Jew and the Universe (l936), Crisis and Decision (1938), Undefeated (1940), an three volumes of a study of the Bible and its influence on world literature, The Book of Books (1948), In the Beginning (1949), and From Slavery to Freedom (1958).
Goldman married the former Alice Lipkowitz on June 23, 1918. They had two children: Geulah (Mrs. Joseph Epstein), and Naomi (Mrs. Albert Zemel). Solomon Goldman died in Chicago on May 14, 1953, at the age of 59.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top
The SOLOMON GOLDMAN PAPERS (1923-1955) describe the career of Solomon Goldman, rabbi, author, and past president of the Zionist Organization of America. The collection consists mainly of correspondence, but also includes sermons, writings and personal items. The span dates for the collection are 1923-1955 with the bulk of the materials spanning the years 1935-1945. The Papers are divided into three series:The CORRESPONDENCE series (1923-1955) makes up the bulk of the collection, consisting of twenty-one and one-half Hollinger boxes of correspondence, reports, minutes and some newsclippings. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the name of the person or organization. Letters are arranged chronologically within each folder. Access to some of the more important subjects and individuals may be made through the Box and Folder List and the Subject Tracings at the end of the inventory. Of special significance in this series are the two and one-half boxes of materials concerning the Zionist Organization of America. Goldman was president of the ZOA from 1938 to 1940 and these files contain an abundance of material on the Zionist movement in the late 1930's and early 1940's.A. CORRESPONDENCE B. SERMONS AND WRITINGS C. MISCELLANEOUS The SERMONS AND WRITINGS series (1932-1952) consists of one Hollinger box of sermons, speeches, articles, and manuscripts. All the sermons and writings are arranged alphabetically according to title and the appendix at the end of the inventory gives a complete listing of all the titled sermons in this series.
SERIES C. MISCELLANEOUS (1943-1953) consists of one-half Hollinqer box of biographical data, tributes, letters of condolence, photographs, and letters of congratulations on the occasion of Goldman's thirty-fifth anniversary in the rabbinate and the seventieth anniversary of the founding of Goldman's congregation, Congregation Anshe Emet, Chicago, Illinois.
