Biographical Sketch

Bernard Semel was born in Galicia in 1878. A Zionist, Semel was active in the Zionist Organization of America and many other Jewish organizations. In 1914 he co-founded (with Judah L. Magnes) the Yiddish newspaper, Der Tog. Semel's main interest was in Jewish education. He was one of the organizers of the Jewish Education Association as well as a board member and secretary of the Jewish Education Committee. Bernard Semel died in 1959.

Collection consisting of correspondence, speeches, newsclippings, and miscellaneous items pertaining to Semel's work in Jewish education, his interest in Palestine, and other matters.

The Bernard Semel Papers are open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

Herbert Semel, by the act of donating the Bernard Semel Papers to the American Jewish Archives, assigned all property rights to the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights are retained by Bernard Semel and his heirs. Literary rights may also be retained by specific creators of materials.
