Biographical Sketch

Adolph Proskauer was born in Germany in 1826 and immigrated to the United States before 1856. He was a prosperous merchant in Mobile, Alabama, and fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major of the 12th Alabama Regiment. After the war, he moved his family to St. Louis where he continued his business affairs. He died in 1900. His son, Arthur Joseph Mayer Proskauer, was an engineer with the railroads and a Captain in the US Army during World War I. He was also an aspiring author.

Correspondence and other papers of Adolph Proskauer, his wife, Julia Proskauer, and his son, Arthur Joseph Mayer Proskauer. Includes plays, poems, and essays written by Arthur Proskauer; reminiscences of the life of John Proskauer of Breslau, Germany, who immigrated to Philadelphia in 1848, written in 1948 by his grandaughter, Jenny Proskauer; papers and correspondence relating to Adolph Proskauer's Civil War experiences; and correspondence and business papers of both Adolph and Arthur Proskauer.

The Proskauer Family Papers are open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

Property and Literary Rights

Jennie Proskauer and Rabbi Ferdinand M. Isserman, by the act of donating the Proskauer Family Papers to the American Jewish Archives, assigned all property rights to the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights are retained by the Proskauer Family and their heirs. Literary rights may also be retained by specific creators of materials.
