Biographical Sketch

Born in Csaba, Hungary in 1848 and educated at the University of Prague, Spitz emigrated to the United States, became rabbi of B'nai Sholom congregation, Chicago (1870-1871), was officiating rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, Milwaukee, where he founded the Ladies' Aid Society, delivered popular and well-attended lectures and wrote articles for various magazines. Later he became rabbi of B'nai El Temple in St. Louis.

Collection contains descriptions of congregations in Milwaukee and St. Louis, his family life, his character, his association with Sonneschein, and his rabbinical and literary activities, as well as a letter pertaining to the Americanization of Jews.
