Institutional Sketch

The Mazirer and Vicinity Relief Committee and United Brahiner and Vicinity Relief Committee of Philadelphia were composed of Jews who immigrated to the United States from the vicinity of Mazir in White Russia. The committees were local branches of national organizations formed to send relief to suffering Jews in Russia. The Mazirer Relief Committee was formed in 1945 to assist Russian Jews in areas devastated by the Nazis, but later sent monetary assistance to the new State of Israel. The committee (with the help of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) also assisted American Jews to locate missing relatives in Russia.
