Biographical Sketch

Morton Mayer Berman was born August 23, 1899 to Morris and Rose Berman in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Yale University in 1921 with a bachlor's degree and was ordained by the Jewish Institute of Religion in 1926. After ordination he continued his studies in Jerusalem, Berlin and France. From 1927-1929 Berman served as Rabbi of Temple Emanuel in Davenport, Iowa, and from 1929-1937 as assistant rabbi of Free Synagogue in New York City. From 1937 until his death he served Temple Isaiah Israel in Chicago, becoming rabbi emeritus in 1957. Berman served as a chaplain in the U.S. Naval Reserve beginning in 1943. He was an active participant in several organizations, notably the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the board of governors of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (beginning in 1948). Morton M. Berman died in 1986.

Correspondence and reports pertaining to the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and to the merger of Hebrew Union College and Jewish Institute of Religion; together with a transcript of an oral history interview, "History of Temple Isaiah Israel of Chicago, 1852-1952" and other writings by Berman.

The Morton Mayer Berman Papers are open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.
