INSTITUTIONAL SKETCH
top
The United Congregation of Israelites, Kingston, Jamaica formed in 1921 as a result of a merger between the Amalgamated Synagogue and the Ashkenazi Synagogue. The Amalgamated Synagogue itself was a result of a 1882 merger of two Sephardic synagogues after both buildings were destroyed in a fires. The new congregation became known as the United Congregation of the Israelites or Synagogue Shaare Shalom.
The new United Congregation agreed to maintain Sephardi ritual with a few exceptions. Services remain semi-Reform, semi-Conservative in style. Ministers have included: Nathanial Jacobs (1927-1935), Henry Silverman (1935-65), Bernard Hooker (1965-1967) and Ernest de Souza (1968-).
