BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Edgar Magnin was born in San Francisco, California on 1 July 1890. He attended Temple Israel in San Francisco as a boy and always knew that he wanted to enter the rabbinate. Magnin was ordained from Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1914.

Magnin returned to his beloved California immediately following ordination to serve one year in Stockton, California, before becoming the rabbi at the oldest Jewish congregation in Los Angeles, B’nai B’rith Temple (which became Wilshire Boulevard Temple in 1929) in 1916. Magnin served at Wilshire Boulevard Temple for 69 years, a record for the Reform rabbinate. He chaired numerous temple building campaigns, including one in 1923 following damage by an earthquake. In 1962, the temple named their new religious school after their long-term rabbi.

During World War II, Magnin served within his community through both the National Jewish Welfare Board as he had during World War I and the more recently formed United Service Organization (USO). Through his connections to these wartime organizations, Magnin became friends with celebrities such as Bob Hope.

While Magnin only published two full length books (one published posthumorously) - How to Live a Richer and Fuller Life (1951) and 365 Vitamins for the Mind (1984), he was a columnist for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner for several decades. “Dr. Magnin Says” remained a perennial favorite for readers, and the later book was a compilation of his best columns. These columns gave information about Jewish traditions, reviewed the latest films and books, and advised on the art of remaining young. Magnin taught at the University of Southern California from 1935 to 1955 and the College of Jewish Studies and in addition was a frequent guest speaker on both radio and television shows.

Magnin was to remain a supporter of his alma mater for the rest of his life, and instrumental in the creation of the Los Angeles campus. The precursor to the Rhea Hirsch School of Jewish Education was the Jewish College of Studies sponsored by the Wilshire Boulevard Temple in the early fifties. Later the graduate school of the Los Angeles campus was renamed after Magnin. Additionally, Magnin was named HUC-JIR’s “Graduate of the Century.”

He was also extremely involved in several non-Jewish organizations. Magnin was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in 1978- Los Angeles County’s highest award for community service. His service included serving on the board of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, search committees for the Los Angeles Public Schools, the local Red Cross, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council and several other organizations. Magnin was also a dedicated member and leader in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.

Magnin was a friend and advisor to several celebrities in both entertainment and the political world. He participated in the inagurations of both Richard M. Nixon and Ronald Reagan. He was also one of the first rabbis to conduct a Jewish service at the White House in January 1973. Magnin met with Albert Einstein in 1931, an event he always remembered. But the rabbi to the stars regularly married and buried stars such as Irving Thalberg, Adolf Zuker, Eddie Cantor, George Jessel and Jack Benny.

Magnin died of natural causes at his Beverly Hills home on 18 July 1984. He was 94.

Edgar Magnin married Evelyn Rosenthal in 1916. Like her husband, Evelyn Magnin was extremely involved in local affairs, including the auxilary of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The Magnins had a daughter Mae Brussell and a son Henry.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top

Collection consists of papers relating to the professional career of Edgar F. Magnin, who was both a rabbi and a leader of the Los Angeles, California community for several decades. Magnin graduated from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1914 and served the remainder of his career as a California rabbi. The nearprint files covering the pre-1914 time period include memorabilia relating to his graduation and related class programs. There is also limited correspondence concerning Magnin’s connection with the formation of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Los Angeles campus.

Magnin served 69 years at Wilshire Boulevard Temple and its predecessor, B’nai B’rith Temple, in Los Angeles. Sermons given by Magnin can be found in the audiorecordings series. Notes and transcripts which match these sermons are located in the sermons and writings files. Magnin believed in extemporaneous speaking, and sermon transcripts that do exist were created from audiorecordings. Occasionally, Magnin performed ceremonies for Hollywood personalities, such as the funeral of Adolph Zukor and Eddie Cantor. Some information regarding these ceremonies are available in the audiorecordings, and others in the memorials and nearprint files. Writings including poetry are found in the undated writings/sermons notes.

Additionally, there is extensive material on the temple that can be found in the personal series, under nearprint and subject names. This includes material relating to the building campaign of the Edgar Magnin Religious School and the confirmation programs. Photographs cover temple events including activities of the school as well as outside activities and fundraising events.

Magnin wrote a column for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, which is in the sermons/writings series. This column was frequently duplicated in the Temple Bulletin and it was not always possible to ascertain who it was written for. They remain largely unseparated. Other writings by Magnin are also in this series.

There is an extremely extensive collection of nearprint and scrapbooks. These are arranged chronologically whenever possible, and include newsclippings, photographs, programs and other miscellaneous materials. Items such as announcements about the cancellation of Friday evening services because of blackout regulations, can be found during the World War II years. In years where Magninn celebrated an anniversary, such as 1935 or 1980, the collection may include correspondence from famous personalities. These letters are either pasted in scrapbooks or are loose in the correspondence series.

The collection spans the dates 1909-1984.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT top

The papers are divided into four (5) series:

  • A. CORRESPONDENCE
  • B. SERMONS AND WRITINGS
  • C. AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS
  • D. PERSONAL AND MISCELLANEOUS
  • E. ADDITIONAL MATERIAL
  • SERIES A.. CORRESPONDENCE. The correspondence series consist of seven Hollinger boxes of correspondence that detail Magnin’s activities both as rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple and as a leader in the Los Angeles community. The series also contains letters written about Magnin’s participation in the Scottish Rite of Masonry. Of interest are tribute letters written to Magnin for both his 50th and 65th anniversary at Wilshire Boulevard Temple. The series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. Span dates are 1915-1984.

SERIES B. SERMONS AND WRITINGS. The sermons and writings series consist of nineteen Hollinger boxes of Magnin’s writings, especially his sermons. Because Magnin prided himself on not reading his sermons, most of the sermons are in note form. Some were transcribed by the temple secretary from the oral recordings (see Series C). The series is arranged chronologically. Within the folder, full transcripts are followed by the sermon notes. Span dates are 1917-1984.

SERIES C. AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS. The audiovisual materials series consist of fourteen phonograph records; 363 cassette tapes and 347 reel-to-reel audiorecordings. It is divided into two subseries: I. Sermons and Services and II. Lectures; Interviews and Speeches. All of the sermons were delivered at Wilshire Boulevard Temple (Los Angeles, California). Occasionally, outside speakers such as Nelson Glueck are featured. Within each subseries, the recordings are arranged chronologically. Span dates are 1939-1982.

SERIES D. PERSONAL AND MISCELLANEOUS. The personal and miscellaneous series consist of twenty-four Hollinger boxes and ten oversize Hollinger boxes. In this series are materials relating to Evelyn Magnin and the Rosenthall family. There are also subject files used by Rabbi Magnin in preparation for holidays at Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Of particular interest are photographs, including the dedication of Magnin Square in Los Angeles. There are also scrapbooks and nearprint- organized roughly by year including newsclippings, articles, programs and memorabilia. Materials are arranged in a single alphabetical listing by subject. Materials are arranged chronologically within subject names. Span dates are 1909-1985.

SERIES E. ADDITIONAL MATERIAL. This final series contains the 2003 donation by Wilshire Boulevard Temple, Los Angeles, California. This series contains correspondence, writings and sermons.
