Biographical Sketch

Rabbi, born in Hungary, June 24, 1839. He was educated at Boskowitz, Moravia where he received his rabbinical diploma in 1863. He later studied at Hamburg and the University of Jena (Ph.D., 1864). After coming to the U.S., he held rabbinical posts in New York, St. Louis, Chattanooga, and Des Moines. He also contributed to numerous German and English periodicals. He died October 3, 1908.


Scope and Content Note

Papers consist of correspondence relating to congregational, educational, rabbinical, scientific, and literary questions as well as personal and family matters. Correspondents include Bernard Felsenthal, Max Heller, Kaufmann Kohler, Alexander Kohut, Joseph Krauskopf, Isaac S. Moses, Morris Newberger, David Philipson, Benjamin Szold, Leo Wise, and Isaac M. Wise.

The Solomon H. Sonneschein Papers are open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

Property and Literary Rights

Henry S. Steiner, by the act of donating the Solomon H. Sonneschein Papers to the American Jewish Archives, assigned all property rights to the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights are retained by Solomon H. Sonneschein and his heirs. Literary rights may also be retained by specific creators of materials.
