BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Selwyn David Ruslander was born January 7, 1911, in Stowe Township, Pennsylvania. In nearby Pittsburgh, he attended public schools and, in 1927, was confirmed at Congregation Rodef Shalom. From 1927 to 1931 he studied at the University of Cincinnati, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During the same period, Ruslander studied at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and was ordained Rabbi in 1935. While in Cincinnati, in addition to educational activities, Ruslander worked as a waiter, lifeguard, and assistant case work supervisor with a federal relief agency the Federal Transient Service Bureau, later known as the Central Bureau of Local Homeless for Hamilton County).

After his ordination in 1935, Ruslander took his first pulpit at Congregation Rodef Shalom, in Port Arthur, Texas. He organized the congregation and was its first Rabbi. He stated in a biographical sketch that he "also sneaked away during this period to be an ordinary seaman in the merchant marine."

From Port Arthur, Ruslander moved to Champaign, Illinois, in 1938, to become Associate Director of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation at the University of Illinois.

A year later, in 1939, Ruslander was appointed Director of Youth Education for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served until 1942, when he received a leave of absence to join the U.S. Navy as a chaplain. He returned to the UAHC position for a short period early in 1946, before returning to the pulpit ministry.

Also in 1939, Ruslander became the first director of the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) and editor of the Youth Leader. He was honored as a Founder of the NFTY on the occasion of the organization's 25th anniversary in 1964.

Ruslander was among the first rabbis to volunteer for active duty in World War II. He received his commission as a Lieutenant Junior Grade) in the U.S. Naval Reserve Chaplain Corps on June 30, 1942. After receiving training, he was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, from September, 1942, to October, 1943. His duties included serving as an instructor at the Chaplain's School at William and Mary College, Williamsburg, Virginia the first Jewish representative on the Chaplain's School faculty).

From November, 1943, to May, 1945, Ruslander served with the Eighth Fleet in the Mediterranean. He was the first Jewish chaplain in the history of the Navy to serve with a combat fleet. At first he was the only Jewish chaplain in the Navy in the Mediterranean area, and he travelled widely in the performance of his duties, from Southern Morocco to Northern Italy, and from France to Palestine. His participation in the invasion of Southern France at Anzio earned him a Combat Star.

Returning to the United States on May 20, 1945, Ruslander was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Chicago, Illinois, until he was released from active duty in December, 1946, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. However, his ministry to military personnel continued both directly and indirectly for another 23 years. As an inactive duty Naval Reserve Chaplain he directly served men and women of all faiths at the Naval Reserve Training Center in Dayton, Ohio, and at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. During the 1950s and 1960s, Ruslander conducted retreats, or Torah Convocations, for Jewish military personnel in Japan, Korea, South Vietnam, and Europe, under the auspices of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army and the National Jewish Welfare Board (NJWB). In 1960 Ruslander became the highest ranking Jewish chaplain in the service when he rose to the rank of Captain. He retired from the Naval Reserve in January, 1969.

After World War II, Ruslander continued his chaplaincy work indirectly by encouraging other rabbis to minister to military personnel. As chairman of the Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy of the NJWB during the 1950s and 1960s, he interviewed and recruited potential new chaplains, primarily from recent graduates of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati and New York City. The NJWB also underwrote trips for Torah Convocations and speaking engagements related to the chaplaincy.

Following his active duty service in World War II, Ruslander returned to the pulpit ministry as the Associate Rabbi of South Shore Temple in Chicago, Illinois, beginning in March, 1946. He was elected rabbi of Temple Israel in Dayton, Ohio, on June 1, 1947, succeeding Rabbi Louis Witt. Ruslander served Temple Israel and the Jewish community of Dayton for 21 years, until his death in 1969.

In addition to his rabbinical and chaplaincy activities, Ruslander was active in civic and social welfare work in the Dayton area, serving on numerous boards of community organizations, including the Human Relations Council, the Dayton Urban League, the Board of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the County Juvenile Court Advisory Council, the Health and Welfare Planning Council's Casework Study committee, the Ohio Committee on Delinquency and Crime, the Ohio Citizen's Council, and the Ohio Youth Commission.

Ruslander received many honors for his service, including an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Central State College, Wilberforce, Ohio, in 1958; Doctor of Hebrew Letters degree from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, in 1960; and honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from the University of Dayton, in 1968.

In 1935, Ruslander married Marguerite (Sis) Benson of Cincinnati, Ohio. They had daughters: Gail Benette Ruslander, born September 23, 1937, married Richard Levin in 1959; Theresa (Terry) Lee Ruslander, born April 24, 1942, married David Miller in 1964; and Judy Ruslander, born in September, 1949.

Selwyn D. Ruslander died in Columbus, Ohio, on July 17, 1969.
