ACCESS AND PROVENANCE

 The Thomas J. Tobais Collection was compiled by the AJA after multiple donations of maerial from Tobias and others. The donors, by the act of donating the Thomas J. Tobias Collection to the American Jewish Archives, assigned the property rights to the American Jewish Archives. All literary rights to material in the collection are retained by the individual authors or their heirs. Questions concerning rights should be addressed to the Executive Director of the American Jewish Archives. The papers are available to researchers in the reading room of the Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Thomas J. (Jefferson) Tobias (1906-1970) was an historian, researcher, author and genealogist, descended from early important Jewish families. Additionally, he was the president of Congregation Beth Elohim, Charleston, S.C., in the 1950s.

 The Thomas J. Tobias Collection consists of photostats of correspondence, resolutions, contracts, Bible records and other papers relating to Southern Jewish families, particularly of Charleston, South Carolina and Congregation Beth Elohim. Includes material on the Alexander, DeLyon, Lazarus, Lyons, Mordecai and Tobias families.
This collection is not divided into series, and has been maintained in original order.
