INSTITUTIONAL SKETCH top
In 1951 at the Third National Convention of the Emma Lazarus Division of the Jewish People's Fraternal Order-IWO (ELD-JPFO) members voted to split away from the parent organization (JPFO) they had outgrown. They named the new organization the EMMA LAZARUS FEDERATION OF JEWISH WOMEN'S CLUBS (ELF). ELD-JPFO had its beginnings in the United Council of Working Class Housewives which later became the Progressive Women's Council. The latter organization merged with the IWO to become its women's division. Many founding members of ELF had been active members of one or more of these organizations. The ELF was founded in the aftermath of World War II. American Jews reacted to the tragedy of the Holocaust with a desire to search for their Jewish identity and prevent future anti-semitic acts and war by promoting Jewish culture and the country as a whole. Inspired by the American Jewish poet, Emma Lazarus, the stated purpose of ELF was to discourage prejudice and promote equality for all ethnic groups in the United States. The Emmas proposed to achieve this purpose by following their "5-Point-Program," which included: 1) Jewish culture and education, 2) child welfare and education, 3) anti-semitism and discrimination, 4) aid to Jews in other lands and 5) civic action in interests of home and family. Cultural and educational programs were important activities for the Emmas during the 38 year existence of the organization. Popular projects included donations to libraries of books pertaining to Jewish and African-American subjects. Study groups in individual clubs employed discussion outlines produced by the national office on a variety of subjects. And cultural programs were often held to honor Jewish, African-American, and other American notables or events. A number of projects to aid Jews (and non-Jews) in other countries were supported by ELF, beginning with the establishment of a day care center in Israel named for Emma Lazarus. Countries to which the organization sent aid included Israel, France, and Vietnam. During the organization's existence members participated in demonstrations, rallies, letter-writing campaigns, petition drives and other civic activities to promote civil rights (for Jews and all Americans) and to protect the health and welfare of the home and the family. ELF was a national organization with affiliated clubs in many cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago. Members included immigrants who actively participated in labor union and women's rights struggles during the first half of the 20th century, notably Clara Lemlich Shavelson, who inspired the Shirtwaist Makers Strike of 1909 in New York City. When ELF was founded in 1951 its Executive Director, June Gordon, was 50 years old. She served in the same capacity until her death in 1967. By that time many other members, especially the leaders, of the organization were senior citizens. Rose Raynes (at age 64) was appointed as second Executive Director. Her title was later changed to President, but she continued as the executive officer of the organization until its demise in 1989. For several years ELF had been losing membership and club support; so, after 38 years of civic and cultural service, the remaining members decided to disband and send the organizational files to the American Jewish Archives.SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top
