ACCESS AND PROVENANCE
The Abraham S. Braude Papers were donated by Abraham and Marilynn Braude, Cincinnati, Ohio between 1991 and 1996. Abraham and Marilynn Braude, by the act of donating the Abraham S. Braude Papers to the American Jewish Archives, assigned the property rights to the American Jewish Archives. All literary rights to material authored by Abraham S. Braude are held by the Braude heirs. All literary rights to material authored by others are retained by the individuals and their heirs. Questions concerning rights should be addressed to the Executive Director of the American Jewish Archives. The papers are available to researchers in the reading room of the Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives. Records of the HUC-JIR Board of Governors Nominating Committee are restricted. Inquiry concerning use of these materials for research purposes should be directed to the Director of the American Jewish Archives.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top
Abraham S. Braude was born to Dr. Morris and Dorothy Braude of Chicago, Illinois in 1920. His family was extremely observant, in part because his paternal grandfather was a rabbi. Braude came to Cincinnati to receive his education at the College-Conservatory of Music. Although he retained his interest in music, following his military service in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he became more active in the business and Jewish communities.
Braude was vice-president of marketing for Gruen Wach Company for ten years before becoming vice-president and part-owner of the Hartmann Luggage Company in Racine, Wisconsin. He returned to Cincinnati in 1961 as the vice-president of J.S.I. Incorporated. From 1973-1980, Braude did marketing consulting. Braude served in numerous Jewish organizations, including president of the Wise Temple in Cincinnati, member of the American Jewish Committee, and chairman of both Cincinnati Bonds for Israel and the American-Israel Culture Foundation. He was appointed to the Board of Governors for HUC-JIR in 1974. He helped to create the secondary Board of Overseers for each campus in the mid-1970s and in 1982 was acting chairman of the Board of Governors.
Abraham Braude married Marilynn Katz in 1943. They had three children: Stephen Edward, Marjorie Karen and Jonathan Paul. He died of complications from lung cancer in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1994

The Abraham S. Braude Papers(1954-1992) describe associational activities of Abraham S. Braude, who served on the HUC-JIR Board of Governors, and helped to found the Board of Overseers for the College-Institute. He also had an interest in music. The papers are arranged in a single alphabetical series. The Nominating Committee of the HUC-JIR Board of Governors files are restricted. Inquiries for use should be directed to the Director of the American Jewish Archives. Correspondents in the Nominating Committee file include Arlin M. Adams, Alfred Gottschalk and Theodore Tannenwald.
