Institutional Sketch

The Association of Jewish Center Workers is an organization of Jewish center and other Jewish communal service professionals committed to the development of Jewish purposes, social group work practice, recreation, and informal educational objectives. The organization brings together professionals devoted to implementing social work and educational services that enhance the creative development of the Jewish person, the Jewish group, and the Jewish community as a whole.

The Association of Jewish Center Workers began in mid-July of 1918 when Samuel A. Goldsmith, executive director of the Bureau of Jewish Social Research, called together the heads of local Young Men’s Hebrew Associations to meet at the 92nd Street “Y” to discuss problems common to all professionals working in Jewish community centers. The group was originally founded as the Association of Young Men’s Hebrew and Kindred Secretaries, with Rabbi Aaron Robison, of Newark, N.J., elected as its first president. After their initial meeting, the fledgling group decided to hold a joint conference with the National Conference of Jewish Social Work in 1919 in Atlantic City. At that conference it was decided that the Association should become a permanent body, with Philip L. Semen, of Chicago, as president.

The organization was later renamed the National Association of Jewish Center Workers. In 1970, its name was changed to the Association of Jewish Center Workers, to reflect the increasingly international scope and function of the Association. In 1989, the organization underwent another name change to become known as the Association of Jewish Center Professionals.
