Name: Third Scholars Conference on American Jewish History Records

Dates: 1996-1998

Abstract: The biennial Scholars Conference on American Jewish History is jointly sponsored by the American Jewish Historical Society and an institute of higher learning. In 1998, the Conference was hosted by the Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Materials include session proposals, correspondence, programs and working papers of the conference planning committee.

Institutional Sketch

The Conference on American Jewish History began as a biennial conference in 1994, sponsored by Brandeis University and the American Jewish Historical Society. The goal was to provide a setting for academics and advanced graduate students to share their recent research and to discuss emerging issues in the field of American Jewish history. The conference is organized by members of the Academic Council for the American Jewish Historical Society together a sponsoring institution of higher learning. The conferences usually run 3-4 days and have approximately 20 sessions presented by scholars.

The 2nd Conference was held at the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York City in 1996. The 3rd conerence was held at Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1998, and was organized by Dr. Karla Goldman. The 4th was held at the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society of Denver, Colorado in 2000.
