Biographical Sketch

Alan Solomon

Alan Solomon was born in New York City in 1933. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Sciences in 1949 and obtained his B.A. in Biology from Bucknell University in Lewisville, Pennsylvania.

While still a medical student at Duke University, Solomon won the Daniel States Memorial Prize for his essay entitled "The Effects of Urine Hydrolysis on Nucleoproteins in Normal Leukemoid and Leukemic Leukocytes." He went on to graduate from Duke Medical School in 1957. He served his residency at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Alan Solomon has been awarded numerous grants from the National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation and American Cancer Society for his work at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Many of these studies have resulted in articles in various medical journals. Solomon has also been an active participant in developing research and student programs at the East Tennessee Baptist Hospital.

Solomon also has an interest in the arts, which caused him to be a leader in the founding of the Knoxville Art Museum. He was instrumental as well in creating a Judaic studies program at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

The Alan Solomon Papers describe the activities and research of Dr. Alan Solomon, cancer researcher at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. This collection contains correspondence, writings and nearprint.

The writings and nearprint series consists of one Hollinger box (1933-1998). This series contains many of Solomon's articles from scientific journals detailing his cancer research experiments.
Nearprint is arranged chronologically by decade within the series. Nearprint consists of newsclippings about grant awards and Solomon's participation in local Jewish and philanthropic activities such as the art museum.
