BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top
Richard C. Hertz was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received an A.B. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1938 and was ordained as a rabbi by Hebrew Union College in 1942. In 1948 Hertz received a Ph.D. in religious education from Northwestern University.
He began his rabbinic career at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, Illinois as assistant rabbi in 1942. From 1943 until early 1946, Hertz served as a military chaplain at Fort Ord, California, earning the rank of captain. He returned to the Glencoe congregation after the war until moving on to Chicago Sinai Congregation in 1947 as assistant rabbi. In 1953 Hertz became the senior rabbi at Temple Beth El in Detroit, Michigan where he stayed for the remainder of his career. Hertz led the congregation through many difficult years in Detroit, including times of civil unrest. He was instrumental in the planning and fund-raising of the new temple in the suburb of Birmingham. Hertz was quite proud of the new temple and considered it one of his finest legacies to future generations.
Hertz was often a spokesman for the Detroit and the American Jewish community. He hosted a local television program Open Doors, appeared on national news stations and on the Voice of America and Message of Israel. Hertz wrote six books, including Prescription for a Heartache and What Counts Most in Life, and had several sermons published. He also wrote many articles, commentaries, and book reviews for prominent newspapers and magazines such as Life and Ebony.
Hertz taught at the University of Detroit, Mercy for many years. Though a Catholic
university Hertz was heartened by the knowledge that he was reaching many people that knew little or nothing about Judaism. Hertz was one of the first to teach in the new field of Jewish Studies. Classes he taught include the Holocaust, Introduction to Judaism, Biblical Studies, and Modern European Jewish History. When Hertz retired as senior rabbi of Temple Beth El in 1982, an endowed chair in Jewish Studies was established in his honor at the University.Throughout his years in Detroit Hertz became known as a leader in the fight for worldwide social justice. Hertz visited the Soviet Union in 1959 on a secret mission for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower was preparing for a summit with Nikita Khruschev and wanted a true report regarding the treatment of Jews there. This trip was considered by Hertz to be one of his most important missions. Upon his return to Detroit Hertz remained actively involved in the Soviet Jewry movement.
Interfaith relations were prominent among Hertzs activities. In 1963 Hertz was the first rabbi to be received in a private audience by Pope Paul VI. In 1974, under auspices of the American Jewish Committee and the National Council of Churches, Hertz was one of twenty-four Jewish and Christian leaders who traveled to Israel and the Arab states to study refugee problems and explore peace alternatives. Hertz often took part in interfaith services, such as the traditional Thanksgiving Day services in Detroit. In 1995 he was given the Dove Award for his interfaith work by the Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies.
Hertz was quite active on boards and committees and was the vice president of the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit, past president of the Wranglers Ministerial Association, member of the Economic Club of Detroit, and the Michigan Advisory Committee of the United States Civil Rights Commission. He was always concerned with the conditions facing the poor, the underprivileged and minority groups. Hertz was often criticized for speaking out on issues close to his heart, though these criticisms did not sway his determination to use his prominent position to help those he saw as disenfranchised.
Hertz died in 1999. He was survived by his wife Renda and his three children, Nadine
Urben, Ruth Joyaux, and Bradford Hertz.SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top
