Sanford E. Rosen was born on May 13, 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Melba Mells on March 19, 1944, with whom he has two children, Ronald and Louise. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Adelbert College of Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Following his ordination, Rabbi Rosen founded the liberal Temple Beth El congregation in Bakersfield, California. There he served also as chaplain and counselor to Jewish inmates at the California State Institution for Women at Tehachapi. In August 1951, Rabbi Rosen moved to San Mateo County, California where he became the founding rabbi of Peninsula Temple Beth El. He remained at Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo, serving as the congregation's rabbi for the next thirty-one years. Following his retirement in 1982, he was named Rabbi Emeritus and continues to reside in San Mateo, California.

Scope and Content Note

The Sanford E. Rosen Papers consist of sermons and prayers written by Rabbi Rosen, the founding rabbi for two California synagogues. Many of the sermons were used for holiday services; the rest concern the balance of living a religious life in a secular world and include discussions of the commandments and the Pentateuch. Materials are arranged chronologically if a date for the sermon was indicated on the document and alphabetically for those undated documents that had a title. The span dates for the collection are 1945-1981.

Arrangement

The papers are divided into one series.
