BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

ROBERT C. ROTHENBERG
(1902-1997)

Robert C. Rothenberg was born on May 5, 1902 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Cora Oettinger Rothenberg and Samuel Rothenberg, M.D. He attended public schools in Cincinnati and graduated from Hughes High School in 1920. Rothenberg then attended Harvard University where he graduated cum laude in 1924.

Following Harvard, Rothenberg moved to Cincinnati to attend the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Following his medical training in Cincinnati, Rothenberg did four years of post-graduate training in Ann Arbor, Michigan in internal medicine. He then returned to Cincinnati where he practiced as an internist. He taught at University Medical School and became a clinical professor for thirty-seven years before retiring in 1969.

Following his retirement, Rothenberg continued his work as a clinical professor emeritus at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine from 1969 to 1996 where he taught small groups of students in courses such as "Medical History Taking;" "Medical Practice, Ethics and the Law;" "Death, Dying and Bereavement;" and “Human Sexuality.”

During his time as a solo practitioner and following his retirement Rothenberg was active at many levels within the medical community of Cincinnati. He served as the medical director of the United Jewish Social Agencies. He was also a long-term member of the board of the Association of Home Care Agencies, and of the Psychiatric Institute. Rothenberg acted as president of the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Society of Internal Medicine, and the staff of the Jewish Hospital. Rothenberg was also the chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Jewish Hospital for eight years and served as a member of the original board of Blue Shield of Ohio.

Rothenberg was also active in the preservation of one of Cincinnati's public elementary schools, the Rothenberg Elementary School, which was built in 1914 and named after his grandfather, Louis Rothenberg, who served as its first principal.

Robert C. Rothenberg married (Minnie) Jean Westheimer on October 3, 1929. Like her husband, Jean Rothenberg was extremely active in both the Cincinnati community and the Cincinnati medical community where her work with the hearing impaired had significant effects across the tri-state area. The Rothenbergs had two daughters, Claire and Jo Anne.

Robert C. Rothenberg died after a long illness on June 9, 1997.

(MINNIE) JEAN WESTHEIMER ROTHENBERG
(1908-2007)

(Minnie) Jean Westheimer was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 3, 1908 to Delphine "Duffy" Ransohoff Westheimer and Leo F. Westheimer. Before prohibition, the Westheimer family was prominent in the distillation and sale of whiskey.

Though a nutritionist by training, Jean (as she was known) found in 1937 that she was beginning to suffer a sustained hearing loss. Following this diagnosis, Jean became a trained hearing specialist. Because of her frustrations with a lack of resources for the hearing impaired, Jean founded both the Greater Cincinnati Foundation Help for Hearing Fund and in 1950 an agency which eventually became the Cincinnati Speech and Hearing Center. Jean worked at the Speech and Hearing Center for over twenty years as an aural rehabilitation specialist.

Jean initiated the Hard of Hearing Fund as part of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. She also founded and maintained the only library that is exclusively for speech pathology and audiology.

For more than forty years, Jean Westheimer Rothenberg worked to bring to Cincinnati the facilities and experience needed to help reduce the isolation of those with hearing loss and to bring their problems to the attention of the public. Jean Westheimer Rothenberg's efforts with the hearing impaired led her to become a lifetime member of SWOSHA (Southwestern Ohio Speech and Hearing Association). She also served on the Library Guild Organizing Committee (now known as “Friends of University Library”).

Because of her prominence in the Cincinnati community through her work with the hearing impaired and also because of her philanthropic work, Jean Westheimer Rothenberg received both the William A. Mitchell Leadership Award and the Cincinnati Enquirer's Woman of the Year Award in 1981.

Jean Westheimer Rothenberg earned an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 1994 from the University of Cincinnati.

Jean married Robert C. Rothenberg, M.D., on October 3, 1929. Robert C. Rothenberg was active in both the Cincinnati community as well as the Cincinnati medical community where he served as a teacher, mentor, and leader to many individuals within the profession. The Rothenbergs had two daughters, Claire and Jo Anne.

Jean Rothenberg died in Cincinnati on May 17, 2007.
