ACCESS AND PROVENANCE

The Moses A. Shulvass Papers were donated the American Jewish Archives in 2004 by Phyllis Gelman of New York City, executor of the Moses Shulvass estate. Property rights to the materials are held by the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights to materials authored by Moses Shulvass are held by the Shulvass heirs, others are held by the individual author or his/her heirs. Questions concerning rights should be addressed to the Executive Director of the American Jewish Archives.

The Moses A. Shulvass Papers are open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the reading room of the American Jewish Archives.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Dr. Moses A. Shulvass was born in 1909 in Plonsk, Poland and ordained at the Tahkemoni Rabbinical Seminary in Warsaw in 1926. He graduated magna cum laude from the University Berlin with his Ph. D. in 1934. He was awarded a Doctorate in Hebrew Literature (honoris causa) from Spertus College of Judaica in 1974. Dr. Shulvass lived in Israel from 1935-1947 where he was active as a lecturer, author and editor. He came to the United States in 1948 to serve as Professor of Rabbinic Literature and Jewish History at Baltimore Hebrew College where he taught until 1951. In 1951 he accepted a position at Spertus College of Judaica in Chicago where he was the Distinguished Service Professor of Jewish History, Chairman for the Department of Graduate Studies and a Fellow of the American Academy Jewish Research.

Dr. Shulvass authored books such as Between the Rhine and Bosporus (1964), The History of the Jewish People, Volumes I-III (1982-1985), and The Jews in the World of the Renaissance (1955 and 1973). He also served as Editor for Italy, A Quarterly for the Culture and History of Italian Jewry, in 1945 and the Jewish Historical Texts Series (1948-1952). He earned several fellowships and awards including a grant from the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture (1968-1969) and the La-Med prize in 1956. He was a member of the Chicago Board of Rabbis, the Hebrew and Yiddish PEN Clubs of America, and the Board of the Historical Society of Israel (1945-1948). Dr. Shulvass died in 1988.

The Moses S. Shulvass Papers are arranged into one correspondence series. The series is arranged alphabetically. It includes correspondence and working papers regarding his writings, his academic activities, and his work with various scholarly and Jewish institutions. Span dates for the papers are 1943-1986. The bulk of the papers are in Hebrew and English althought some are in German, Yiddish, and Italian.
