BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Jerome Malino (1911-2002) was born on June 7, 1911 in New York City. Rabbi Malino graduated from the College of the City of New York in 1931 and was ordained by the Jewish Institute of Religion in 1935. He received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Alfred University in 1958 and a Doctor of Divinity Degree from HUC-JIR in 1960.
Rabbi Malino assumed rabbinical leadership of the United Jewish Congregation in Danbury, Connecticut in 1935. Over the next 67 years Rabbi Malino was heavily involved in both his congregation and the Danbury community. Malino was a member of the Danbury Board of Education for many years and served as its chair for twenty years helping secure funds to build several new school buildings for the community. Malino was also a member of the Danbury Music Center and the Danbury Concert association.

He was on the Board of Directors of the local anti-poverty agency, as well as several other local human service organizations. Rabbi Malino served as a chaplain for the Federal Corrections Institution in Danbury where he counseled and inspired a number of prisoners. He was also a member of the Institute of Religion in an Age of Science and was elected president of the organization twice.

Malino taught classes in Homiletics at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion for a number of years and also held adult study courses for his congregation. In 1979 he was the first Rabbi from a small congregation to be elected President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, a title he held until 1981. Malino retired in 1981 from active service at the United Jewish Congregations but was named Rabbi Emeritus, a post he held until his death in 2002. After his retirement, Malino remained active in his congregation teaching, mentoring, and lecturing.

Rabbi Malino was committed to peace and social and economic justice for all. He remained a pacifist throughout his life, sympathizing with those imprisoned during World War II for being conscientious objectors. He spoke out strongly against the Vietnam War. He lectured and wrote on a variety of topics and published many original poems and translated others.

Jerome Malino married Rhoda K. Simon in June of 1936. They had two children Frances and Jonathan Malino. Jerome Malino died on February 25, 2002.
