BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Arthur King was born in Berlin, Germany on August 1, 1906 to Myron L. King and Sophie Snow King. At the age of 3 months, the family returned to their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where King was educated at the Harvard Grammar School and the Cambridge High and Latin School. He was part of Temple Israel’s Sunday school and was active in the Boy Scouts. In 1926, King graduated from Harvard College and, in 1931, he obtained his MD from Harvard Medical School.

Following graduation from Harvard Medical School, King obtained a Rockefeller Teaching Fellowship at Tulane University in New Orleans from 1931 – 1933. Following that appointment, he applied for Army active duty and was assigned to the Station Hospital at Barksdale Field, near Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1934, he took up a residency at the Brooklyn Methodist Episcopal Hospital. In 1935, he decided to move to Cincinnati, Ohio to take up practice as an OB/GYN, where, in 1936, he was appointed to the Attending Staff of the Jewish Hospital. Subsequently, he became a member of the faculty of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and as an Out-Patient clinician at the General Hospital (now the University Hospital). During this time, King also kept a private practice, which he continued until the mid 1980’s.

At Harvard, King joined the R.O.T.C. Field Artillery Unit, and in 1941, received his orders to active duty in 1941. On August 4, he reported for duty at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland and was assigned to command the Ambulance Battalion of the 104th Medical Regiment of the 29th division. In January 1942, he was reassigned to be Task Force Surgeon of a new division being formed in New York, and on January 23, 1942, he sailed to Noumea, New Caledonia by way of Panama and Melbourne, Australia. . In Melbourne, he was appointed Medical Inspector and Executive Officer. His only combat was in October 1942, when he volunteered to go up to Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands, where he compiled a Sanitary Survey of the island. King was then transferred to the Fourth Service Command on Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides (now Vanuatu). He was returned to the United States in June of 1942, and reverted to civilian status in April of 1946.

Arthur King married Marthe on July 24, 1931. Marthe King graduated from Boston University School of Education in Fine Arts and was an artist throughout her life. The Kings had two daughters: Angie King, born in 1941, and Deborah King, born in 1947. King died in 2002 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
