Hannah G. Solomon
(1858-1942)

Hannah G. Solomon was born on January 14, 1858 in Chicago, Illinois to Michael and Sarah Greenebaum. In 1877 Hannah and her sister Henriette became the first two Jewish members of the Chicago Woman’s Club. In 1879 she married Chicago business man Henry Solomon. Together they would raise three children, Herbert, Helen, and Frank.

In 1893, as a part of the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Hannah Solomon organized a national Jewish Women’s Congress to participate in the fair’s Parliament of Religions. The congress was the first of its kind, and under Hannah’s guidance it voted to become a permanent organization, taking the name NCJW. Hannah was elected its first president, and served as the president of the NCJW until 1905. During this time period the NCJW would focus on the preservation of Jewish traditions through the education of Jewish women, and on the improvement of communities through extensive social work programs.

In addition to her work with the NCJW and the Chicago Woman’s Club, Hannah also worked with the Park Ridge School for Girls, the Zion Literary Society, the Chicago Motion Picture Commission, and many other organizations. Hannah worked closely with other leaders in the women’s rights field, including as Susan B. Anthony, Jane Addams, and Carrie Chapman Catt.

In 1904 Hannah traveled to Europe to as an American delegate to the International Council of Women in Berlin, Germany along with Susan B. Anthony. Hannah returned to Europe for vacations in 1927 and 1930, and in 1923-24 she participated in a trip around the world.

Hannah Solomon died of natural causes on December 7, 1942 in Chicago. Late in her life she began work on an autobiography with the help of her children and grandchildren. The autobiography was published posthumously in 1946 under the title Fabric of My Life.

Helen S. Levy
(1881-1955)

Helen Solomon was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 9, 1881, the daughter of Hannah G. Solomon and Henry Solomon. Helen earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1903. In addition to three years of study at the University of Chicago, she also completed her junior academic year at Wellesley College in 1901-02.

Upon completion of her degree, and after prompting from Jane Addams, Helen began working on the establishment of the Helen Day Nursery in a working-class neighborhood on the westside of

Chicago. Helen would also later serve as the president of Chicago Association of Day Nurseries and as secretary of the Special Committee on Nursery Care for Color Children.

Outside of children’s day care, Helen served on numerous other social organizations, including: the Chicago Woman’s Club (including chairmanship of the Education and Philosophy Department, the Race Relations Committee, and the National and International Affairs Committee), the Chicago Urban League, the National Committee on the Cause and Cure of War, the Emergency Citizen’s Committee on Industrial Relations, the Chicago Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, the Mayor’s Commission on Human Relations, and the Woman’s Joint Committee on Adequate Housing. In addition to these and other organizations that Helen served through a leadership role, she was a member of countless other groups.

On September 21, 1911 Helen Solomon married Emile Levy of Canton, Mississippi. They had one child together, Frances H. Levy. Helen S. Levy died on January 25, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois.

Frances H. L. Angel
(1912-2001)

Frances H. Levy was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 20, 1912 the daughter of Helen S. Levy and Emile Levy. In 1936 Frances married Philip Angel Sr., and moved to Charleston, West Virginia. Together they raised two children, Philip Angel Jr. and Henry Angel.

Carrying on the social service traditions of her family, Frances founded and was the first president of the West Virginia chapter of the NCJW. Other organizations that Frances helped to create included the Charleston Cerebral Palsy Clinic, the Kanawha Valley Day Center for the Elderly, and the River School. In addition to the creation of these social organizations, Frances also became the first Jewish member of the Charleston YMCA board, the first female jury foreman in Kanawha County, and served on the Governor’s Commission of the Status of Women.

In 1960 she was named the Charleston Gazette’s Club Woman of the Year, and in 1980 she received the Hannah G. Solomon award from the NCJW. Frances H. L. Angel died on March 29, 2001 in Charleston, West Virginia.

Florette S. Angel
(1943-1993)

Florette Snyder was born in Laurinburg, North Carolina on August 8, 1943 the daughter of Sol and Anna Snyder. At the age Florette’s family moved to Bastrop, Louisiana where she would live until 1963. In 1963 Florette married Philip Angel Jr., and moved to Charleston, West Virginia. Together they raised three children, Philip Solomon, Emile, and Antony.

Throughout her life Florette was an advocate for a wide range of social issues, including anti-racism, healthcare, separation of church and state, abortion rights, and children’s rights. While championing these issues Florette became involved with many different social aid organizations. Most notably Florette founded the West Virginia Youth Coalition (later renamed the Children’s Policy Institute of West Virginia), was a founding member of the private River School, aided in the creation of Charleston’s first two homeless shelters, and served on the Governor’s Cabinet on Children and Families.

Florette also had a deep interest in art. This interest, along with her social conscious, led to the creation of the Mountain Artisans organization in the early 1970s. The dual purpose of Mountain Artisans was to help elevate the lives of individuals in Appalachia through the fair marketing of their crafts along with the preservation of the cultural heritage of West Virginia and the Appalachia region.

After a long battle with cancer, Florette S. Angel died on August 3, 1993 in Charleston, West Virginia. Before her death she created the Florette Angel Fund for Children’s Advocacy to continue her work after her passing.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top

The Hannah G. Solomon Family Papers consist of papers relating to the private and professional lives of Hannah Solomon, Helen Levy, Frances Angel, Florette Angel, and other family members. Materials in the collection have been sorted by subject matter, and when viable chronologically. The collection is composed of working documents, correspondence, scrapbooks, diaries, photographs, magnetic tapes, audio cassettes, VHS cassettes, and other ephemera. Most of the documents in the collection are originals, but there are also a number of photocopies and prints of scanned images.

The papers in this collection represent one part of the archival materials of Hannah G. Solomon. Additional material is housed at the Library of Congress, MSS82191: Hannah G. Solomon Papers, 1817-1986.

Perhaps the most significant part of the collection is the series of documents that illustrate the creation of the National Council of Jewish Women and its operation during it early years under the leadership of Hannah Solomon. Other areas of interest include correspondence between family members, the notes for Hannah Solomon’s autobiography, Helen Levy’s extensive work with the Chicago Woman’s Club, the eleven scrapbooks that document Florette Angel’s fifty years of life, and the New Year’s Stunts family events from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The collection spans the dates 1867-2001.

The papers are divided into six (6) series as follows:

A. HANNAH G. SOLOMON
B. HELEN S. LEVY
C. FRANCES H. L. ANGEL
D. FLORETTE S. ANGEL
E. OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS
F. GENERAL FAMILY

SERIES A. HANNAH G. SOLOMON. The bulk of the materials in the Hannah Solomon series relate to her organizational work and her autobiography Fabric of My Life. Of particular interest are early NCJW correspondence and organizational materials, diaries from her 1904 trip to Europe where Hannah served as an American delegate to the International Council of Women, and an early draft of her autobiography. Span dates are 1877-1996.

SERIES B. HELEN S. LEVY. The subjects covered most extensively in the Helen S. Levy series are Helen’s writings and her organizational work. Of particular interest are the materials from Helen’s time as a member of the Chicago Woman’s Club, her involvement with the Helen Day Nursery and the Chicago Association of Day Nurseries, and her correspondence home from her year at Wellesley College. Span dates are 1894-1955.

SERIES C. FRANCES H. L. ANGEL. The bulk of the materials in the Frances Angel series are her correspondence and organizational work. Of particular interest is the large quantity of correspondence written by Frances to Hannah Solomon and Helen Levy and the materials on the National Council of Jewish Women, including the creation of the West Virginia chapter. Span dates are 1912-2001.

SERIES D. FLORETTE ANGEL. The bulk of the Florette Angel series consists of scrapbooks detailing the life of Florette. The scrapbooks contain writings, photographs, newspaper articles, and other materials that document Florette’s public and private lives. Due to the richness of the materials found in the scrapbooks there is a large over-lap between the information found in the scrapbooks with the information in the rest of the series. Span dates are 1943-1996.

SERIES E. OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS. The other family members series consists of papers from relatives of the Four Ladies. Of particular interest are the papers from individuals who played an important part in Chicago and Illinois history, including Henry Greenbaum, Joe Solomon, and Henry Solomon. Span dates are 1867-1999.

SERIES F. GENERAL FAMILY. This series consists of papers that either do not limit themselves to one family member, or the creator of the document is unknown. Of particular interest are the materials relating to the families early involvement with the Chicago Sinai Temple, the families relation to the family of Orson Welles, and the families New Year’s Stunts between 1898 and 1936. Span dates are 1895-2000.
