BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH top

Fradle Freidenreich was born in Chicago, the daughter of a well-known Yiddish poet and a Jewish educator. As a young woman she participated in a one-year leadership development program sponsored by Habonim, the Labor Zionist Youth movement. She has worked in all areas of education, formal and informal, serving as a teacher, principal, curriculum writer, camp director, researcher, consultant, and university lecturer in Chicago, Montreal, New York, and Israel. Prior to her Aliyah in 1989, she was the Associate Director of JESNA (Jewish Education Service of North America) where she held various positions during her 19-year tenure. These positions included Director of Methods and Materials, Lay Leadership Consultant, Director of Action Research, and initiator and editor of the 18 issues of JESNA’s “Annual Roundup of New Programs.” In Israel, Freidenreich worked in higher education, at various teacher training colleges and at Tel Aviv University, and was the Academic Consultant and Director of International Relations at MOFET, Israel’s consortium of institutions conducting teacher-training programs.

Freidenreich is a graduate of Concordia University (Montreal, QC) and National Louis University (Evanston, IL). She also attended graduate programs at Columbia and NYU in New York. She received the degree of Doctor of Pedagogy honoris causa, awarded by The Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Additional honors include Fellow of the American Jewish Archives, Fellow in Religious Education awarded by the National Association of Temple Educators and UAHC, and Moment Magazine’s first Community Service Award. Freidenreich has served on the boards of many professional organizations, including the Association of Jewish Communal Service, Educators Assembly, Council of Jewish Education, and the Labor Zionist Alliance, and also on several committees of the Ministry of Education in Israel.

Fradle and her husband Barry live in Herzlia, Israel. She is the mother of three and the grandmother of three.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE top

The Fradle Pomerantz Freidenreich Collection consists of material collected for use in the preparation of her book Passionate Pioneers: Yiddish Secular Education in North America, 1910-1960 (published by Holmes and Meier, Inc., available January 2010), which covers Yiddish secular schools and summer camps in the United States and Canada and includes over 60 images of letters, memorabilia, and scenes from the schools themselves. This research collection is comprised of correspondence, questionnaires, memorabilia, song books, statistics, articles, conference minutes, camp yearbooks and more, and details the heyday of Yiddish secular schools and summer camps. Roughly half the documents are written in English, the other half in Yiddish. Freidenreich’s own guide to the collection can be found in Box 13, folder 11. Researchers may also find a review of the Table of Contents of Passionate Pioneers useful in working with the collection; click here to view a PDF version.

The collection has been arranged into seven (7) series:

SERIES A. This series consists of research files on Yiddish secular schools in the United States; the files are divided into two groupings: Agrarian Colonies and Urban Communities. The "agrarian colonies" are specifically those where Yiddish secular schools were documented. Please also see Series B., Yiddish Secular Schools in Canada, for additional documentation of the schools in agrarian colonies.

SERIES B. This series consists of research files on Yiddish secular schools in Canada, both agrarian and urban.

SERIES C. This series consists of subject files containing background material used by Freidenreich in her research on Yiddish secular schools and Jewish education. Of particular interest is Box 13, in which can be found summaries of statistical information, lists of various kinds having to do with the individual schools, and a timeline regarding early secular Yiddish schools in North America (1910-1962).

SERIES D. This series contains personal reminiscences of camp experiences from the 1930s through the 1950s, as well as pamphlets and yearbooks about the individual camps. The camps were found in both the United States and Canada.

SERIES E. The roles of individuals in this continent-wide success story are detailed in this series, along with the organizations of which they were a part. See the Glossary of Sponsoring Organizations of Yiddish Secular Schools and Camps for a listing.

SERIES F. The writings found in the Dissertations and Books series provided background information for Freidenreich. Please note that some of the manuscripts are complete, and others are only the portions relevant to Freidenreich's research.

Series G. The Audio-Visual materials currently consist of video and audio programs which involve Dr. Freidenreich or discuss her research.

For additional print sources used by Freidenreich in her research, please see the Selected Bibliography in Passionate Pioneers; click here for a PDF version. Additionally, Freidenreich has donated some of these materials to the AJA and to the HUC-JIR’s Klau Library in Cincinnati. For a listing of the books given to the AJA, please click here; for a listing of books given to the Klau Library, please click here.
