Biographical Sketch

Justine Wise Polier, daughter of Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, was a lawyer, domestic relations court judge in New York City, author, referee for the State Department of Labor, officer in the Womens Trade League, active in the International Judicial Association, NY Conference on Unemployment Insurance, Child Adoption Board and the Free Synagogue. Her husband, Shad Polier was a lawyer and civil rights activist. Both were active and served in the American Jewish Congress.

Collection includes 10 and 12 inch phonograph recordings of radio interviews and addresses of Justine Wise Polier and Shad Polier covering subjects of civil rights, foreign affairs, social work, adoption, and legal matters. There is also one recording of Stephen S. Wise accepting an award in March 1949. Span dates for the Polier recordings are 1948-1964.

The Shad and Justine Wise Polier Phonograph Record Collection are open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

Trudy Festinger, by the act of donating the Shad and Justine Wise Polier Phonograph Record Collection to the American Jewish Archives, assigned all property rights to the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights are retained by Trudy Festinger and their heirs. Literary rights may also be retained by specific creators of materials.
