Institutional Sketch

The Coalition for Advancement in Jewish Education [CAJE] was organized to improve Jewish education through professional development and advancing the skills, knowledge and visibility of Jewish educators. It also championed the needs of Jewish educators and increased access to teaching resources by building partnerships among local and national organizations.

CAJE held annual conferences for Jewish educators. It also offered publications, online professional development, curriculum services via print and online materials, early childhood programs, educator advocacy, web links, and a variety of other programs. It served Jews of all backgrounds and ideologies creating an open dialogue between all types of educators.

Originally named the Coalition for Alternatives in Jewish Education, CAJE held its first “Conference on Alternatives in Jewish Education” at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island in August of 1976. The conference was initiated by the North American Jewish Students’ Network, and was intended for give Jewish educators space to share and dialogue freely regardless of ideology or institutional affiliation. Its purpose was to push the boundaries of Jewish education by creating new programming and educational methods.

The word “alternatives” in the title was meant to invoke the sense that this was something new; a counter culture of educational techniques. The first conference was such a success that the participants voted to hold a second conference the following year and to make the conference its own entity separate from the Network. They elected a committee to organize the second conference and create support for the conference in the community. After the second conference was a success, a national board was elected and regional representatives chosen whose task was to organize other teachers across the country and develop other programs and projects.

Conferences were held every year and in 1979, CAJE met at Rutgers University for the fourth convention and adopted a constitution. They divided the country in four regions, deciding to meet alternately in the various regions. CAJE set up Task Forces, which later became Networks, to allow people with similar interests to network and dialogue throughout the year. Membership and conference attendance grew significantly, as did the services CAJE provided. In 1981 Eliot Spack became the first executive director of CAJE.

In the mid 1980’s the Coalition no longer saw itself as a counterculture movement. It was receiving funding from major Jewish institutions and had become main stream. At the1987 conference, CAJE changed its name to the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education. The annual conference remained the Conference on Alternatives in Jewish Education. CAJE continued to grow during the 1990’s but due to several factors, began to lose membership and financial assistance during the middle and end of the past decade. CAJE’s long-term executive director, Eliot Spack, retired in 2006 and was succeeded by Jeffrey Lasday.

Due to the severe economic recession and other factors, CAJE was forced to cancel its conference scheduled for August of 2009 and eventually ceased operations in 2008.
