Born in Russia, Samuel Blumenfield was a rabbi, educator and scholar. Ordained at the Jewish Institute of Religion, he served as superintendent of the Chicago Board of Jewish Education, and as dean, director and president of Chicago's College of Jewish Studies. Active in Zionist and educational affairs, Blumenfield was a prolific author in both English and Hebrew and was a regular contributor to the Hebrew Literary Monthly, Opinion, and Reform Advocate, among other periodicals. He taught at Hofstra University, University of Chicago, Roosevelt University and the New School for Social Research. He served as an officer in the American Jewish Congress, Central Conference of American Rabbis, Avukah, National Council for Jewish Education and Union of American Hebrew Congregations. In 1930 he married Rose Mazel. They had three children.
The collection consists of drafts (mostly typescript) of essays written in Hebrew and English by Blumenfield on Jewish education, Israel, Zionism, and persons such as Mordecai Kaplan and Ephraim Lisitsky.

This collection is open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.
Herb Bronstein, by the act of donating the Samuel M. Blumenfield Papers to the American Jewish Archives, assigned all property rights to the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights are retained by the Samuel M. Blumenfield heirs. Literary rights may also be retained by specific creators of materials.
