Biographical Sketch

Stanley J. Garfein was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1937. In 1959 he received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and was ordained at the Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in 1964. He served student pulpits in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Petoskey, Michigan, and Evansville, Indiana. After ordination, he served Temple Israel of Creve Coeur, St. Louis, Missouri, from 1964–1966. The remainder of his career was spent at Temple Israel in Tallahassee, Florida from 1966–2001, after which he retired and became Rabbi Emeritus. In 2007 he published his first children’s book, Tales of the Temple Mice, and he currently serves as president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Tallahassee. Throughout his career he has been a vigorous advocate for social justice, and has been politically active in Tallahassee, often offering the open prayers at sessions of the Florida Senate and House of Representatives.

Rabbi Garfein and his wife Vivian have two daughters.


Scope and Content Note

The Stanley J. Garfein papers consist primarily of annual reports and addresses presented by Rabbi Garfein to Temple Israel, Tallahassee, Fla., between 1970-2001. Records from 1970-1989 are incomplete; the bulk of the collection consists of reports dated from 1990-2001. Files contain background correspondence, clippings, and other material concerning the activities and programs of Temple Israel during this time. Included is a file on the visit of KKK leader David Duke to Tallahassee in 1997.

This collection is open to all users. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

Stanley J. Garfein, by the act of donating the Stanley J. Garfein papers to the American Jewish Archives, assigned all property rights to the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights are retained by Rabbi Garfein and his heirs. Literary rights may also be retained by specific creators of materials.
