Biographical SketchMoshe Pelli, born in Israeli in 1936, is currently the Director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Judaic Studies and the Abe and Tess Wise Endowed Professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Central Florida. His major area of specialization is Modern Hebrew Literature, with concentration on Hebrew Haskalah (Enlightenment) in the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition, he has written extensively on the literature of the Holocaust, and has taught courses on the Literature of the Bible. Prof. Pelli has published twelve scholarly books on Hebrew Enlightenment, Hebrew culture in America, and literature of the Holocaust, as well as two novels and eight children’s books. Scope and Content NoteThis collection consists of files relating to Professor Pelli’s 1998 book ha-Tarbut ha-Ivrit ba-America, Hebrew Culture in America: 80 Years of Hebrew Culture in America (1916–1995). These files include handwritten notes, photocopied newspaper and journal articles, and nearprint. A full third of the collection is devoted to articles of Hadoar, a newspaper published by the Histadruth Ivrith, the Hebrew Language and Culture Association in the USA. The collection also contains extensive documentation on other publications by the Histadruth Ivrith, as well as articles on specific people associated with the Histadruth Ivrith and information on the Histadruth Ivrith’s Hebrew Youth Movement, Hanoar Haivri. The original manuscript collection is available in the Barrows-Loebelson Reading Room of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives. Property and Literary RightsMoshe Pelli, by the act of donating the Moshe Pelli Papers to the American Jewish Archives, assigned all property rights to the American Jewish Archives. Literary rights are retained by Moshe Pelli or his heirs. Literary rights may also be retained by specific creators of materials.
