Institutional SketchBefore the turn of the century, the Jewish Community Center began as a small settlement house in Cincinnati's West End. By 1932, that house had developed into a full-service family agency with a constitution and far-reaching cultural, educational, recreational, and social services. For nearly three decades, the Center's programs were housed in several Avondale locations. By 1960, the Center moved to a new location in Roselawn--into facilities specifically designed to accommodate its unique services and growing membership. In 2008, the Center moved into the Manuel D. & Rhoda Mayerson JCC, located on The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati Campus in Amberley. The Jewish Community Center provides the Jewish and secular communities of Greater Cincinnati with resources, facilities and programs which enhance their physical, intellectual and social lives. One of the JCC's most popular programs was The Forum, founded by Clarence E. "Mike" Israel in 1934. The Forum was a year-round lecture series that promoted civil rights and civil liberties, notable because of the high caliber speakers that it was able to bring to Cincinnati. Throughout its nearly 40 year history, The Forum hosted such speakers as Justice Thurgood Marshall of the Supreme Court, author and lecturer Norman Cousins, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling. Scope and Content NoteThe Jewish Community Center records consist primarily of correspondence, meeting minutes, nearprint, and publicity materials. Included are general records of the JCC; minutes and awards of the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee in conjunction with the Association of Jewish Libraries; and records of The Forum lecture series. These records provide insight into the many facets of the role the Jewish Community Center plays in the Jewish community of Cincinnati, as well as the wider Cincinnati community, as reflected in the programming activities of the JCC.
