Biographical Sketch

Dr. Benjamin Witten was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 4, 1916, and lived there until his death on May 2, 1976. He was a distinguished and award-winning research chemist, lifelong student of Judaism, and devoted husband and father. He left an extraordinary legacy of professional accomplishment and service to the Jewish community in Baltimore.

In 1945, Dr. Witten married Dorothea Walters (1920-2002), a registered nurse and also a native of Baltimore. Together they raised three children, Sarah (1948-2009), David (b. 1949) and Samuel (b. 1957).

Dr. Witten died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 59 on May 2, 1976. He had two younger siblings, Dr. Louis Witten (b. 1921) and Jean Witten Rubin (1918-1965).
